2008 Priorities
Our Mission – Provide honest, open, efficient and ethical government that is fiscally responsible, accessible and responsive to Salt Lake County's needs. We achieve this by responding to citizens' concerns, caring for our environment, promoting economic development, and enhancing human services while ensuring safe communities.
Quality Government ;– Be a model of open, honest, ethical and fiscally responsible government.
- Planning, Not Politics
- Help public quickly access information and services. “No wrong door to county government.”
- Increase collaboration/coordination among county departments.
- Improve fiscal and procedural controls, and performance measurement.
- Set the standard in internal training, education, and organizational development.
Economic Development – Improve and coordinate the business environment in Salt Lake County.
- Continue developing a world-class technology park.
- Support small businesses: UPGRADE, workshops, revolving loan fund, forums, and health insurance.
- Foster increased tourism and convention activity by supporting and enhancing our recreational and natural resources.
- Renew or create Foreign Trade Zone and redevelopment areas.
Natural Environment - Protect, restore, and preserve land, water and air in Salt Lake County.
- Revitalize and preserve streams, rivers and corridors, including the Jordan River: a Lake to Lake Vision.
- Acquire and preserve open space and protect foothills.
- Promote and support one million new trees planted in Salt Lake County.
- Reduce emissions, energy and water usage, while promoting and expanding the use of solar and other renewable energy sources.
- Increase recycling, use of energy-efficient vehicles, and develop more environmentally responsible buildings and practices.
Quality of Life – Maintain and improve the health, social quality and economic stability of citizens through education, services and planning.
- Maintain and expand quality recreation, art, entertainment and education opportunities: new recreation centers, libraries, after-school programs, hiking/biking trails, and senior centers.
- Establish a regional and countywide planning effort for the future.
- Increase prevention/treatment of substance abuse and mental health issues; increase child immunizations; and lower obesity rates through healthy activities.
- Increase adoption and reduce euthanasia of healthy domestic pets by 20%.
Public Safety – Ensure that citizens are safe in their homes, neighborhoods and businesses.
- Implement seamless emergency dispatch.
- Support efforts to provide effective, coordinated law enforcement countywide.
- Increase alternatives to incarceration – training, education, treatment – without compromising community safety.
- Improve County emergency preparedness and coordination.
- Provide coordinated law enforcement with more local control.
Education – Improve and expand educational opportunities and the quality of the experience for children and adults.
- Provide leadership for improved education governance.
- Increase access to after school programs.
- Increase access to expanded learning opportunities.
Employee Satisfaction - 95% of County employees say they are satisfied with their employment by 12/31/08.
Customer Satisfaction - 95% of our customers (internal and external) are satisfied with the services they receive from Salt Lake County by 12/31/08.
Environment - By 12/31/2008, implement programs and policies to decrease total energy and water usage by Salt Lake County facilities and activities by 20% for calendar year 2009.
